SPOTLIGHT- #VBT & #GIVEAWAY OLD SINS BY CHARLIE COCHRANE

A detective, his boyfriend and their dog. That’s the Lindenshaw mysteries in a nutshell. Old Sins is the fourth instalment in the series, and not only does Robin have a murder to investigate, he and Adam have got the “little” matter of their nuptials to start planning. And, of course, Campbell the Newfoundland gets his cold wet nose into things, as usual.

About Old Sins

Past sins have present consequences.

Detective Chief Inspector Robin Bright and his partner, deputy headteacher Adam Matthews, have just consigned their summer holiday to the photo album. It’s time to get back to the daily grind, and the biggest problem they’re expecting to face: their wedding plans. Then fate strikes—literally—with a bang.

Someone letting loose shots on the common, a murder designed to look like a suicide, and the return of a teacher who made Robin’s childhood hell all conspire to turn this into one of his trickiest cases yet.

Especially when somebody might be targeting their Newfoundland, Campbell. Robin is used to his and Adam’s lives being in danger, but this takes the—dog—biscuit.

Available now from Riptide Publishing.

About the Lindenshaw Mysteries

Adam Matthews's life changed when Inspector Robin Bright walked into his classroom to investigate a murder.

Now it seems like all the television series are right: the leafy villages of England do indeed conceal a hotbed of crime, murder, and intrigue. Lindenshaw is proving the point.

Detective work might be Robin's job, but Adam somehow keeps getting involved—even though being a teacher is hardly the best training for solving crimes. Then again, Campbell, Adam's irrepressible Newfoundland dog, seems to have a nose for figuring things out, so how hard can it be?

Check out the Lindenshaw Mysteries.

Book blurb:

Everything Dominic Price has worked hard to uphold is about to come crashing down on everything he holds dear.

So much for the quiet life. Just as assistant US attorney and brewery owner Dominic Price is settling into a comfy new chapter with his partner, FBI agent Cameron Byrne, the sudden death of Nic’s father puts their happily-ever-after in jeopardy. Nic immediately suspects foul play, his prime suspect a notorious gangster his father was indebted to—only now the loan shark is out for blood.

Cam has been longing for Nic to finally let him in on this very personal case. But when Nic’s belief that he’s the sole Price heir is upended, the line between personal and professional starts to blur, leaving Cam unsure of where he stands.

Nic is depending on Cam’s kidnap and rescue expertise to save his recently discovered family member before it’s too late. But with a dangerous threat closing in, the ghosts from Nic’s past cast long shadows. Any relationship could crack under the pressure, but for Nic, finding his family might mean losing the love of his life.

Layla Reyne says: Nic and Cam have to fight for their lives and their happily ever after in this exciting, action-packed conclusion to the Trouble Brewing series.

Excerpt

Cam was more than a little disappointed.
The press had wanted a show this morning and now that he and Nic were ready to give them one, Vaughn was arriving at SFO’s private terminal. Sure, Cam could have leaked what was about to happen here—like someone had leaked the news of Curtis’s death—but their friends also frequently used this terminal. Privacy was part of what they and others paid for here; he didn’t want to violate that expectation, for their sake.
Without a crowd of press, the line of suited federal agents, with him and Nic standing in front, was unmistakable. Which was probably why Vaughn was taking his sweet ass time disembarking. Cam had offered to storm the plane with his agents but Nic wanted to wait. That, however, was twenty minutes ago and Nic’s shoulders were inching higher. Cam wanted to lay a hand on his arm or back to ease him, but with the agents behind them, he settled for stepping closer and putting their heads together, like they were having a tactical discussion.
“He wants to provoke you,” Cam whispered low. “You need to bring back the mask. Be the magician.”
Nic glanced sideways, taking his eyes off the G5. “The magician?”
“That’s what Aidan calls you.” Cam chuckled at Nic’s eye roll, glad for the break in the tension. “I know it’s a mask, but it’s still remarkable how you pull it up on command and keep your cool, no matter the situation.”
“That’s not being a magician. That’s being a SEAL.”
“Then that’s who you need to be.” Nic had given him this lecture more than once over the past year, and it’d saved him time and again. Kept him in the Agent Byrne mindset when Cameron Byrne, brother and son and former thief had been scratching beneath the badge’s surface. “You need to be Captain and Assistant US Attorney Dominic Price right now, not Dominic Price, son of Curtis Price.”
Nic’s shoulders lowered another notch. “Thank you for coming with me.”
“No place else I’d rather be.”

REVIEWED BY:

What a great ending to a great series.

I can definitely see a spin off of this about a certain co-owner ;)
I would also LOVE to see a novella of a certain event between a certain couple.
#vagueing

In this last installment we know that Nic was struggling with not really having a family, he was very secretive about his tattoo and he and Cam were still trying to cement their relationship while dealing with Nic's dad and thugish loan sharks.

ALL things WILL be answered. Even if it takes awhile to get there. Nic and Cam have come out as a couple, but it still seems times Cam is still unsure of where he lies with Nic. Could be because Nic is still so secretive about certain aspects of himself (said tattoo and its meaning), but Nic isn't trying to malicious, he's trying to protect those he loved. He always seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Cam and Aiden, Jamie, Lauren...they're all trying to show him he isn't alone and doesn't have to carry it alone.

Things escalate with Duncan Vaughn (loan shark) and all the moles among them, it takes Nic down another path that leads right back to his past. He gets to meet new people while rekindling with some old and getting much needed closure with a burden he's been carrying around for 30 years.

Again, like all Layla's stories, there's lots of action and fights and most likely kidnapping, but she always, always gives us a much needed HEA. I was completely hooked from beginning to end.

From Chapter 1

Phil Torres sat in Mercer General’s basement level breakroom for the first time that shift. With a sports drink in one hand and a protein bar in the other, he worked to cram both things into his mouth. He couldn’t remember what he’d eaten last or when. Even so, he had no appetite. Other nurses came and went through the breakroom offering looks of sympathy and pity. He was on the ass end of a 16-hour shift no sane person would envy.

It had been a trial of will. He’d seen some terrible things in the three years he’d been a fully licensed nurse but during this one shift, he’d beheld some of the worst things he’d ever seen, things that would haunt his dreams and hang on during his waking hours. A savage gunshot wound, a leg so badly broken the bone slashed through the skin, a pair of asthma attacks that left the patients blue in the face, gasping, and a stomach bug so virulent, puke covered the floors of two of their closet sized exam rooms. The cleaning staff was going to love this evening’s cleaning detail, but it was just another night at Mercer General.

“What’re you still doing here?” Yolanda came into the breakroom, looking every bit as tired as Phil felt. Her sneakers, damp from the storm she’d weathered out on the floor squelched with every step as she made her way to the lockers. “Didn’t your vacation start an hour ago?”

Phil took a swallow of sports drink to help keep his meager meal down. “Jackie was running late, so I filled in for her, then Shelly needed help tapping a vein… I got trapped.”

Yolanda rolled her eyes as she shut the door to her locker. “More like you let yourself get trapped.”

She was right, of course.

During his time here, the older nurse had taken him under her wing, brought him into the fold. They’d become as close as cousins. It helped Phil feel at home out here on the West Coast where he had no family and few friends, but as a side effect, lying to her was now next to impossible.

Yolanda perched on the plastic chair next him. She bumped him with her shoulder. “I’ll never understand why you always drag your feet when it comes time to get out of here. You’ve got an OK place—by yourself—in a decent neighborhood. You know how many people would kill for that set up? What’s the issue?”

Yolanda couldn’t understand it. She had a home waiting for her. A husband and kids who kept her busy. She might not admit it but they filled her life with joy. All Phil had waiting in at home was a dog bent on systematically destroying anything he could get his mouth on.

“I like keeping busy,” he said. “It’s not a crime.”

“Neither is taking time off once in a while.” Yolanda quickly wiped her sneakers down with a paper towel and threw it into the trash. “Since you got here, you’ve never taken more than three days off at a time. You need this break. You’re gonna burn out if you don’t take it easy.”

There was truth to Yolanda’s words, but to hear her tell it, Phil was a workaholic, little more than a care dispensing robot. He knew how to relax. He just didn’t enjoy it.

Work kept him too busy to worry about the lacking areas of his life. He liked helping people and Mercer’s shortage of staff guaranteed any offers to come in on his days off were never turned down. Without work, as rough as it could be on a good day, he’d be left alone. He didn’t know what to do with alone.

“Why can’t it be a week? Or two! I’d gladly do that much!”

Yolanda clucked her tongue in disgust. “I wish they’d let your ungrateful ass give me the two months since you so obviously don’t want it. I don’t see how you let it rack up.”

“Same,” Phil said. “Same.”

Yolanda stood, ready to go back out onto the floor, but she stopped in the doorway. She rested a small hand on Phil’s shoulder. “Your body remembers how to relax, even if you don’t. But you’ve got to get out of here first.”

REVIEW
First let me tell you that Nasu is a place. A place where Vampires come to schmooze their elder(s) and "be themselves". Kind of like a vampire bar for vampire court.

The first half of this book had me hooked. Phil is deeply immersed into his job after he finds out his BF was cheating on him. His friend gets him to go out on his first night of his forced vacation, Phil meets a mysterious stranger AND encounters his ex. It was actually kind of comical how his drunken friend is more upset about than Phil is. Even started a fight in the bar, which kind of ruins Phil's chances for the night with said stranger. It also allows Phil and Shige to have a first date. Again, things don't go as planned and Phil is attacked in his own home.

Once Phil is taken to Shige's place ("for hi safety"), things start to become uninteresting to me. It's the same struggles for these 2 over and over again and it got quite boring. It took me a WEEK to finish 273 (?) pages. It should have only taken a few hours. Shige is a dick and I don't really like him. Phil is sweet and confused and really just wants to go home. I don't understand what Phil sees in Shige..at. all.

I found there to be a lot of editing errors in this book, almost as if it were translated from another language? Maybe that had something to do with the lack of flow in the book? Not sure, but that being said,  this leaves a lot of growing for the author and I can't wait to dive into book 2. I want to know (while i believe i know anyways) why Phil's blood is poisonous to some and not others. Hopefully Shige will get his head out of his arse while he's at it too.

From Chapter 1

PHIL

“Earth to Phil!”

Phil blinked at the sudden snap inches from his nose. He shook himself as the world rushed up to meet him. He’d been adrift in a sea of consciousness surrounding them. There were 30 other people in this restaurant, and at any given time, Phil heard the thoughts of the closest 15 or so, everything from the mundane to the raunchy. None of it was his business, but his instinct was to latch onto every granule of information as he noticed it. Giving in was very easy and verysatisfying.

Sorry. I’m here.” But he hadn’t been. Thoughts continued to float in and out of his mind, not all of them his own. Today was particularly bad. It kept getting harder to focus on the things he needed to live his life.

Before, he needed to concentrate to hear other people’s minds, like eavesdropping. Now it was like everyone spontaneously broke into fits of reciting their inner monologues. There was no way to tell when it would start, but nine times out of ten, it was when he needed all his mental faculties.

He’d taken more breaks at work than what his job owed him, just to get away from the noise. People had started to notice. He’d been lucky enough not to hurt anyone yet, but it was only a matter of time.

“You sure?” Jerome said with no small amount of skepticism threading through his words. “You’re a little spacey.”

“I got distracted by a work thing, but I heard every word.”

Jerome cut his eyes at him. “What’s the last thing I said?” He smirked.

“You asked how things are with Shige.”

Jerome sucked his teeth. “Lucky guess.”

The question from his brain reached Phil before Jerome put it into words. It got mixed in the deluge of their fellow diners’ minds, but he remembered because it concerned him directly and hadn’t been about the food. He focused on Jerome, and the feedback lowered to a dull hum, blending with the audible background noise of the restaurant.

“So you got an answer for me? Hurry up, while it’s just us.”

“We’re good. Why would I go on this trip with him if we weren’t getting along?”

The short answer was what Phil told him; things between him and Shige were fine. The truth, as always, was more complex. He didn’t know what they were or where they stood.

REVIEW

Remember that room for growth i mentioned above? It's happening and i couldn't be more glad.
Only a few editing errors, but nothing like book one. The flow seems a bit more polished as well, which is great to see. I can see the stories only getting better from here. My biggest peeve is I wish there was a glossary for some of the words. There's quite a bit of Japanese thrown around, and I'm not fully sure what they mean. You get the gist of it through the conversation and context of what's going on, but more clarification would be nice.

Phil and Shige have a rocky start to their relationship and things are still shaky in the beginning of this story. As it progresses and Phil learns more control over his abilities and a bit more interesting information about how he came to be a "sensitive", their relationship gets a little more solidified. In book one I actually didn't like Shige, but the tables have been turning in this one. By the end of the story they're more on the same page, but it ends on a cliffhanger. Shige's past is coming back and Phil still needs to learn about his ancestors. I'm super intrigued by this and will definitely be reading on.

REVIEWED by Stephanie

4*

This book is advertised as a stand-alone, which it is... But there are going to be other books about different characters from this story. I LOVE how they tied in a little bit to Sex & Mayhem and GnB. Mona's sister is from Blood & Marriage (Guns N Boys 3.5) and I was so excited about that.

As for the story, expect the same level that you get from reading Sex & Mayhem. This is my third (I think) FF romance, and by far my favorite.

Rain was a dick, but a likable dick. Sometimes the way she treated Mona was just rude. I can't blame her though, she's been through some shit, and she's no longer used to having people other than family in her space. She's struggling because she WANTS to be patched in, but the misogyny that comes along with a biker gang runs real deep. It's infuriating to read because the struggle is real. So I am sympathetic to her cause.

Mona comes off as a badass, burning down churches in the first chapter, but she's also sweet as pie. Mainly due to a sheltered (ish) life. But she really is made of steel and proves it at every turn. Whether it's defending herself against men who think she owes them something or revenge on behalf of her girlfriend. She's kind of a crazy character that you can't help but love and I really hope we get to see more of her in the future. I'm also glad she gave up stripping and is doing something outside of the mold of what a "spoiled princess" would do.

Synopsis:

Dying isn’t what it used to be.

Wes Cooper was dead. Then he wasn’t—though he’s not exactly alive, either. As an immortal not-ghost, he can transition between this world and the otherplane, which makes him the perfect thief for hire. For seventy years he’s made a “living” returning items to their rightful owners, seeing his fair share of the bizarre in the process. But he’s never witnessed murder. Until now.

His latest mission brings him more than he bargained for: a very-dead actor who is definitely going to stay that way. It’s just Wes’s luck that his ex-boyfriend, Detective Hudson Rojas, is assigned to the case. Hudson broke Wes’s heart years ago—and could again, given he’s rocking a hot silver-fox look that shouldn’t be legal.

As they work together to track down the murderer before anyone else gets hurt, it becomes clear Wes and Hudson have unfinished business. And when a secret Hudson’s been keeping threatens more than just their happiness, it might mean the end of their not-life together—permanently.

Teaser

When I woke up, I knew exactly where I was and exactly whose arms were around me. I’d gotten up a couple of times to use the bathroom, because I had the bladder of an elderly man even if the rest of me looked like a college student. Each time I crawled back into bed, enjoying the heat Hudson emitted—enough to keep me warm but not enough to make me overheat—he pulled me close and held me tight.

So waking up with my face mashed into his chest and our legs intertwined was not a surprise. The fact that I was rubbing my morning wood against his thigh? That was a little more shocking.

But damn, it felt good.

Okay, no. I had to stop. He was still asleep, and rubbing one out using his incredibly hard and muscular thigh with the perfect amount of rough texture—no. Bad Wes. Consent. Gotta have it. I forced myself to stop and pull away—

Only to have Hudson’s hand clap my butt and haul me back to where I’d been, my erection drilling into his leg.

“Hud?”

He grunted and pressed on my ass to get me humping again.

I was only so strong.

Release Blitz Excerpt:

It seemed like I’d barely closed my eyes before something woke me. Thuds on my door. I thought for a second it might be Lexi again, but she never knocked on my door like that, all authoritative and belligerent. I flung the blankets away from my face long enough to yell, “You’ve got the wrong apartment!” before diving back into my fluff pile.

The bursts of heavy knocks slid into something more rhythmic, an indication that whoever was at my door had settled in for the long haul. I kicked the blankets off with severe prejudice. Who the fuck made that kind of noise at—I squinted at the clock—midnight? I scrambled out of bed and marched to the front door, bouncing off a doorjamb on my way. And banging my knee on the end table. And almost tripping over the edge of the throw rug.

I did not function well without sufficient sleep. I also did not think clearly, or else I might have checked the peephole in the door before flinging it open with a harried, “What?”

Hudson stood there in dark jeans and a black leather bomber jacket open over a plain gray T-shirt, revealing his badge on a chain. His gun sat on his hip, an unusual choice for him, and his hair was…not mussed, but definitely not as styled as when he wore a suit. Five o’clock shadow peppered his jaw, silver glinting among the darker shades.

“You’re not wearing a suit,” I observed. Call me Captain Obvious.

“Night off,” he said distractedly, his gaze traveling from my head down…down…down. The tip of his tongue emerged to wet his lips. “You’re not wearing clothes.”

I jerked my gaze away from him to look at myself and—yep, naked. “Christ,” I muttered, and darted back toward the bedroom.

Reviewed by Stephanie

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There were quite a few PNR elements thrown in that I wasn't expecting, but apparently neither was Wes, despite his BFF and long time family friend of the Aster witches, Lexi's warnings.

I also wasn't sure how I would feel about this, dead-not-dead, element, but I didn't need to worry. Jenn did a very good job with it and I liked the aspect of the "otherplane". I did, however, want to shake Hudson for being a prick half the time. Yeah, yeah, he had his reasons, but damn him! lol At least he redeems himself, not only with Wes but in taking responsibility for Evan. (Evan is a kid he meets at a club and an unfortunate accident happens).

This story is a slow burn between Hudson and Wes but the simmering heat between the 2 makes it all worth it. It also seems Wes is asexual until it comes to Hudson.
The story is action packed and flows pretty well, IMO. I am excited to see where this "Family of Freaks" is headed.

Hunt saboteur Rae can’t believe his luck when he wakes up the next morning. Cash is gorgeous, and the hottest hook up he’s ever had. He doesn’t expect to see him again, until a twist of fate lands him on Cash’s doorstep a few months later.

United by a cause that’s broken Cash before, they are drawn together. They have more in common than they ever imagined, but with Cash haunted by the past, and Rae so tangled in the present, it’s not long before love isn’t enough to keep them alive.

I LOVE when I read a (romance) book and it actually teaches me something new. Whether they're little life hacks to total subjects like Sabs (saboteurs).

I never knew this was a "thing". People dedicated to bringing down illegal hunting. So dedicated, in fact, they basically live in colonies so they can be on the go to help save innocent animals. I'm in awe of this. There's absolutely NO way I could give in a tent. I hate camping for a weekend, let alone months on end, heck even years? No way. Kudos to the ones who can and do. This is pretty much Rae's life. He lives with a gang who try and stop illegal fox hunting. As Garrett points out in the beginning, it will talk about the hunt, but not in detail if an animal gets caught, though I'm sure you can use your imagination.

I think these types of hunters are despicable. The lengths they go through for the chase of one fox is astounding. If they used that energy towards something worthwhile, a lot of good could happen. Unfortunately that's not what's happening here, so people like Sabs and Rae exist.

The "relationship" between Cash and Rae is a complicated one. Cash has some deep rooted hurt regarding the Sab life so when he finds out about Rae being one, it's like he's been thrown into the past. He's not sure if he can trust Rae so his feelings for him are so conflicted. He pushes away, only to get sucked back in.

I was completely rooting for them though, they had great chemistry and I was sick of seeing Cash sad and grumpy, especially when his roomies, Lucky & Dom, seem so happy together.

I was wondering how this story would all come together, but I needn't have worried. Garrett knows how to give our heroes a HEA or a HFN at the very least.

Side note: this is book 2 in a series, but I feel it can be read as a standalone. Lucky is book 1 and he is featured in this story. I don't feel you would be confused, but i also fell you should at some point experience Lucky's book :)
