Mate, family, pack, home… can Quinn and Kellan have it all?
Quinn grew up feeling out of place in the small town he calls home. Yearning for something he can’t name, he’s always felt different but never known why.
Kellan is part of a nomadic shifter pack. When they set up camp in the woods near Quinn’s town, the humans are unwelcoming and suspicious of the newcomers. The moment Kellan catches sight—and scent—of Quinn, he knows Quinn is special. But for the first time in his life, Kellan can’t trust his instincts. Quinn is human, and Kellan is a wolf shifter, so how can they ever be mates?
Their bond is instant and exhilarating. It breaks Quinn’s heart to know their relationship can only be temporary. Love isn’t enough when pack law forbids shifters to mate with humans. Tension explodes between pack and humans, and when Quinn discovers a shocking truth about himself that changes everything, he fears he’ll have to choose between the only life he’s ever known and the man he loves.
REVIEWED BY:
What a great shifter story. The story itself was unique and
it flowed really well. It was sweet with some drama, but Jay didn't really beat
around the bush and over articulate things.
Quinn, having never met his parents, was raised by his
mother's sister, Aunt Ruth.
In a time when shifter and human alliance were very, very
rocky, his aunt had to make some choices for them.
Quinn never really questioned about his parents and their history,
he seemed to have just settled into day to day life with his aunt and his best
friend Tash. He has always had a curiosity about shifters and would study them
in books and films. So when he hears a pack has come to town, he decides he
wants to take a peek.
Kellan is part of a nomadic shifter pack, so when they hit
town, it also means they need to hit up the city for some work. As Kellan
enters the store he catches the scent of someone familiar, a certain peeping
Tom.
Only something is off with this humans scent and he's not
sure what it is.
This is what kept me reading (well mostly) was the mystery of
why Quinn's scent was different than just a normal human. I wanted, no needed,
to know what his aunt t was hiding. Of course I had suspicions, but I didn't
know if it was a kind of malicious intent or not, though that didn't seem to
fit her personality. This is the part of the story that made this shifter book
differ from others. Along with the different kind of mating between them. I
kind of really liked the fact that they couldn't speak to each other in their
heads, and went of smells and intuition.
Quinn is very passionate about shifter "equality"
amongst humans, and it's kind of adorable when he gets a little riled up with
the snooty, bad talking townfolk. I also thought it was a great reference to
some injustices that happen in daily life.
When tragedy strikes with one of the humans own and the
wolves step in (even though they didn't have to after being treated the way
they did) it really brings this nomadic pack and the small minded townsfolk
together. Jay just really rounded up the ending nicely, giving us our HEA for
these heroes.
