About Looking
for Group
So, yeah, I play Heroes of Legend,
y’know, the MMO. I’m not like obsessed or addicted or anything. It’s just a
game. Anyway, there was this girl in my guild who I really liked because she
was funny and nerdy and a great healer. Of course, my mates thought it was
hilarious I was into someone I’d met online. And they thought it was even more
hilarious when she turned out to be a boy IRL. But the joke’s on them because I
still really like him.
And now that we’re together, it’s going
pretty well. Except sometimes I think Kit—that’s his name, sorry I didn’t
mention that—spends way too much time in HoL. I know he has friends
in the guild, but he has me now, and my friends, and everyone knows people you
meet online aren’t real. I mean. Not Kit. Kit's real. Obviously.
Oh, I’m Drew, by the way. This is sort of my
story. About how I messed up some stuff and figured out some stuff. And fell in
love and stuff.
About Alexis Hall
Alexis Hall
was born in the early 1980s and still thinks the 21st century is the future. To
this day, he feels cheated that he lived through a fin de siècle but
inexplicably failed to drink a single glass of absinthe, dance with a single
courtesan, or stay in a single garret.
He did the
Oxbridge thing sometime in the 2000s and failed to learn anything of substance.
He has had many jobs, including ice cream maker, fortune teller, lab
technician, and professional gambler. He was fired from most of them.
He can
neither cook nor sing, but he can handle a 17th century smallsword, punts from
the proper end, and knows how to hotwire a car.
He lives in
southeast England, with no cats and no children, and fully intends to keep it
that way.

If you're not an MMORPG player or have zero knowledge of it, this book is
probably not for you. I will guarantee you will be lost in the first chapter
between the abbreviations and the world and group chatter of the game ((which
is actually done like real in game chatter)) For those of you that know wtf a
DSP, PVP, ABC ;), then
/continue.
If you really want to try this book though and aren't privy to the gaming
world, I highly recommend the glossary that's in the back of the book.
The story is basically inside the game. Our two MCs meet when Drew joins a new
guild. Drew finds Solace's outlook on in-game play intriguing, because he
pretty much literally stops and "smells the roses" instead of just
going quest to quest. It's helping Drew find his love for the game again, and
is slowly drawing Drew to Solace (aka Kit). It's also bringing up the whole
"you never know who's behind a character" thing up as well. Drew
isn't quite sure if solace is male or female, as the character is female. He
knows there's a high chance the real player is male, especially his own char is
a female as well. This doesn't stop him from being drawn in. He's only slightly
shocked when he finds out the truth.
I will admit it got a little droll for me with all the explanations and details
about them waiting on and going into the raid, like, did we really need ALL
that information? But the in game chatter is quite hilarious, and the puns on
what certain things are called (Nether Caverns for example). Aside from all the
extra information, I thought it was a very cute story and I found myself
smiling a lot.
I have to say, I'm not sure Drew's bf, Sanee, is a good friend or not. He takes
his rubbing to heart and ends up almost ruining things with Kit because of it.
I like the message this story brings as well, especially in the era of online
friendships, as we all have them. It doesn't matter what other people think as
long as what you're doing makes you happy and is important to you, that's all
that matters.
I give the book 4 controllers
