She lived on the ground floor of a nice-looking building

amid a complex of nice-looking buildings. “Thanks for escorting me to the door,” she said as she unlocked her door.

I nodded, then handed her the bag she had packed for the trip to Minnesota. “Anytime,” I said. “Thanks for flying up. You need some cash to cover the plane ticket?”

She pushed open her door, then palmed her keys, her eyes dropping to our feet.

“Yeah, if you don’t mind? I kind of blew the rent money on the plane ticket,” she confessed.

I pulled out my wallet and peeled off a couple Franklins. “Where do you work?” I asked, and pressed the cash into the hand she was holding her keys in. Why hadn’t I ever asked that before? I was a self-obsessed dick at times.
