About the author

CHERYL HEADFORD was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was 16, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.
Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews and cousin and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.
Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a re-enactment group who traveled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.
It was here she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that still wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.
In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the valleys with her son and her two cats. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close. The part of her that needs to earn money is a lawyer, but the deepest, and most important part of her is a storyteller and artist, and always will be.

Charlie's Hero by Nic Starr

TITLE: Charlie's Hero

SERIES: Heroes #1

AUTHOR: Nic Starr

PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press

COVER ARTIST: Bree Archer

LENGTH: 200 Pages

RELEASE DATE: June 17, 2015

BLURB: Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It's love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh's reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh's concerns, he can't help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It's not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn't come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie's hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn't need his parents.

HE WAS in love. Totally, wonderfully, head over heels in love. Love with a capital L, hell, love in full uppercase. All it took was one look, one simple glance, and he was a goner. Of course the object of his admiration was classically handsome—tall and athletic, glowing with good health. Bright eyes, wide smile, waves of shining hair tucked behind perfect ears. He was like all Charlie’s dreams come true, with golden skin hugging strong muscles that strained on long limbs. But even if Charlie hadn’t been attracted to the man’s spectacular good looks, there was no way to overlook his actions.

When Charlie first saw him, he was kneeling on the schoolyard ground, tending to a little girl who was lying prone on the soft-fall rubber surface under the play equipment. She was one of Charlie’s second graders. Her right leg, bent at a strange, unnatural angle, gave a big clue as to her injury. Charlie hoped the leg was the worst she was hurt.

An efficient auburn-haired paramedic was treating her injured leg while the gorgeous guy knelt by her head, hands on either side of her blonde curls, keeping her still. He whispered into her ear, the words obviously having a calming effect—the little girl stared intently up at him, the hitch in her breathing the only evidence of any distress. There was a gentleness to his touch, despite the large hands, and caring in his tone as he concentrated on his patient. How could Charlie not fall in love with this glorious combination of caring, masculine beauty?

“Mr. Matthews. Mr. Matthews.” The urgent high-pitched voice and persistent tugging on his hand drew his attention reluctantly away from the scene unfolding in the playground. Shit, he thought, what the hell am I doing just standing here staring when I should be taking care of the other children, who are no doubt worried and scared? Dropping to one knee and looking Jennifer in the eye, Charlie gave her his full attention. “What is it, Jenny?” he asked, knowing she was going to voice her worry about her small friend on the ground.

“Is Alison going to be all right, Mr. Matthews?” she asked in a low and quavering voice. He replied in a way he hoped would calm her fears, by keeping his voice even and low.

“She’ll be fine, Jenny. Her mummy and daddy will meet her at the hospital, and Miss Bryant is going to go stay with her until they get there. Alison is in very good hands. See those paramedics?” He pointed toward the action under the monkey bars, and she looked across at the small group on the ground and nodded gravely. “Well, they’re very good at their jobs. They’re going to take Alison to the hospital so the doctors can put a cast on her leg. I’m sure she’ll be back at school in no time.”

“But she won’t be able to play,” she whispered, obviously still worried for her friend.

“No, she won’t,” he admitted. “At least she won’t be able to run around for a while, but she will be able to draw and play board games. I know you love to draw, so maybe you can play with Alison to make her feel better. I bet you’ll be able to write your name on the cast too.”

At that, Jenny met his gaze and finally smiled. “Really!” she said with excitement. “That’d be totally cool!”

They looked up as the paramedics wheeled past with the gurney. Little Alison was tightly strapped aboard. She was lying still, no doubt in shock, and holding tightly to the hand of Charlie’s hero. He only glanced their way for a second, obviously reluctant to take his attention away from the little girl who needed him, but that was enough. Their gazes connected, his warm brown eyes seeming to look straight into Charlie’s soul. The surge of emotion that flooded through him took him by surprise. The paramedic blinked and the spell was broken. They moved swiftly past Jenny and Charlie, then loaded the gurney into the back of the ambulance.

Charlie stood frozen to the spot, still holding Jenny’s small hand in his, and watched the ambulance leave. Finally he took a deep breath, turned back to the schoolyard, and started to round up any children still in the playground.

“Come on, everyone,” he called. “It’s time to get back to class.”

As the last stragglers made their way into the single-story building that housed the small group of classrooms, he knew he would be spending the afternoon reassuring the children. He decided that making get-well cards for Alison would be the best way of distracting the group of second graders.

Fully Fleshed Out Characters - Our heroes and their hobbies
Usually a story begins life as a seed of an idea. The initial idea could be triggered by a song, or an image, or just a random thought that pops into my head. The plot bunny may start out as one or two paragraphs, a very high-level summary of what the books will be about. This summary will then be expanded into a rough outline of the story. However, it’s impossible to move forward very far without understanding the characters.
Before I start writing the story, or even building a detailed outline, I consider my characters and begin to flesh them out. One of the first things they get is a name. I find it impossible to progress unless the main characters have both first and last names. Once this happens they become ‘real’ people.
Josh Campbell and Charlie Matthews are the main characters from Charlie’s Hero.
Josh and Charlie began life as bullet points – ages, occupations, physical characteristics, family history, educational backgrounds, romantic and sexual experience, and so on. Next I found images to support their appearance—I like to be able to visualize my boys as I work on their story. If you want to check some of the images that represented Josh and Charlie, click here.
However, knowing what they look like, and what they do for a job, isn’t enough. Heroes need to be fully fleshed out and well rounded. They need personalities. Developing a Character Profile means identifying a character’s strengths, but also understanding their weaknesses and limitations—yes, our heroes may have faults. After all, no one is perfect.
One part of developing characters I really enjoy doing is giving them interests and hobbies—whether it be doing up cars, cooking, playing pool, camping, extreme sports, crosswords, reading...  Sometimes they do things I love (reading and cooking), or have tried (sky-diving), and sometimes I give them interests I know nothing about at all. Thank goodness for Google and the patience of friends who answer all my questions. ☺
In Charlie’s Hero, Charlie takes Josh on a hike to a place with a beautiful outlook. The location isn’t specifically mentioned and the story is set in the US, however, the hiking concept was based on my own experience of some fabulous walks I’ve been on in Australia. I must admit that I’m not a seasoned hiker, in fact I’d say I’m very much a novice, but we have some beautiful places that are very easy to get to. The photo below was taken in the Blue Mountains, just west of Sydney.

BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY ~ Dojo Boys: Dragon and Crow by Alex A. Akira

Title: Dragon and Crow - Deluxe 2 Volume Set

Series: Dojo Boys

Author: Alex A. Akira

Publisher: Triple A Press

Cover Artist: Alex A. Akira

Length: Volume 1 – 275 Pages; Volume 2 – 390 Pages

Release Date: 25th May, 2015

Blurb: Twenty-three-year-old, Native American, Michael Black’s well-ordered life is disrupted one evening when he is ambushed at the dojo he frequents by a mysterious Japanese youth who goes by the name of Kiyoshi.

Soon circumstances have the gorgeous teen staying with Michael at his apartment. The gifted nineteen-year-old is an intriguing mix of angst, innocence and crafty intelligence, but Michael is honor bound by a promise to his sensei to keep his distance. Michael tries to keep his desire in check, but what can he do if the exquisite teen keeps kissing him?

Volume two finds Michael in deep water when, in trying to help Kiyoshi, he is persuaded by his sensei to participate in a joint government undercover operation to bring down a Yakuza lord.
Before long Michael is immersed in beautiful men, martial arts and espionage all to gain the trust and love of Kiyoshi. Secrets, lies, sex and action combine in this racy, romantic, adventure of two men, Michael Black and his sensei, Ichiro Kimura, navigating a dangerous path for true love.

Michael groped for the light switch, a smile of triumph playing at his lips. Damn, I did it! I beat him! Flicking the switch, he turned, eager to view his skilled opponent and to bask in the accolades that he was sure to receive from Sensei Kimura.
His triumph descended to dismay in a flash. Who the hell is this?
A slight figure lay crumpled at the center of the practice room. Cautiously approaching the limp form, Michael’s heart sank even further. Lying unconscious on the gleaming bamboo floor was a Japanese boy. He looked to be about five-foot-seven, was very pale, and quite young.
“A kid? I beat up a kid?” Quickening his pace, Michael knelt beside the slim figure. Jesus, he’s like fourteen, fifteen? Beautiful. He looks like Ichiro. Better, actually, Michael admitted, surprised at his internal betrayal of his long-held crush on his sensei. He continued to stare down at the slight, fragile boy, eyeing the long blue-black hair that trailed sensuously around the figure’s unfamiliar gray karategi.

Who the hell is he? Why would they have me beat up a kid for my test? Puzzled, he glanced around the room, noting that he and the boy were alone. Ignoring his impending alarm, he gazed back to the unconscious figure.
The youth’s face was truly beautiful. Michael’s inner artist drank in the smooth, pearly skin, the long, sooty lashes, and the pale apricot color blushed across the boy’s delicate cheekbones. God… An aching hunger preceded the lurch of Michael’s cock, which nudged his lower abdomen telegraphing its interest. Get it together. He’s like … twelve! Suddenly realizing that the boy showed no sign of regaining consciousness, Michael snapped from his trance and shook his opponent’s shoulder.
“Hey!” He leaned over the placid body, hand stretching toward the longish neck for a pulse. The telltale thump throbbed beneath his fingers, but his proximity to the boy’s face had him pausing to stare at the youth’s sculpted lips. Christ, get away from him before you do something you’ll regret. Frowning, he started to shift upright when a relentless grip clutched his hair.
Caught off guard, Michael fumbled helplessly as his head was tugged abruptly toward the face beneath him. The beautiful mouth claimed his lips, stealing his breath and muffling his gasp as a hot tongue invaded his mouth. The agile member eagerly caressed its counterpart, igniting Michael’s senses. The tantalizing scent of ripe apricots surrounded him, dizzying him with sensual promises, and urging him to surrender.

Review ~ The Tide of War by Lori Witt

Title: The Tide of War
Author: Lori A. Witt
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure
Expected Release June 22, 2015
 Riptide Publishing.

Lieutenant Commander Kyle West is one of Earth Fleet’s greatest fighter pilots. Every day, he leads his squadron into battle over Earth’s cities in a seemingly endless war against a vicious alien race, defending his home and his loved ones.

Millions of miles away, the Fleet’s Elite Squadron attacks from another angle, engaging the enemy on its home turf. Casualties are high, and the Squadron needs more of the Fleet’s very best. But joining the Elite is a death sentence—a surety Kyle isn’t willing to face. Until a devastating attack wipes out the family he refused to leave.

Commander Andrei Dezhnyov, an Elite Squadron gunner, isn’t sure what to make of the cocky new American pilot. Kyle is equally uncertain about the snarly Russian, but as they warm up to each other, their tentative alliance becomes a deep bond—one that endangers them both when a daring and disobedient rescue reveals secrets that call into question everything they’ve ever believed about their enemy. Secrets that their superiors would kill to protect.

I went into this book with my eyes wide shut.  Fighter pilots and gunners fighting off an alien force that is threatening to destroy Earth.  Where men and women marry to cover their "secrets" and men and women fight and flight side by side.
Loved all the action and the visual effects written in this book, they were without a doubt truly believable.  I felt all the G-forces and I myself could not see for the black haze surrounding Menar.

Loved the relationship between Kyle and Emily,  though I think that Andrei's and Ogrufina seemed stronger.  This book is mind blowing toward the end, I had to pick my jaw off the floor, flip back a couple of pages, just to make sure I missed something when the plot was revealed.

This is not a erotic book, all sex scenes are off the page but the story is great, the detailing is second to none and I'm still in "holy shit" mode at the books end.

Wow....

What just happened? One minute I'm reading about Elite fighters fighting lizard "people", and the next....
Well, read it to find out. Haha!!

I think if you're not a sci-fi reader, you should still read this book. I'm not heavy on the genre, but this...it blew my mind. It definitely isn't what you think it is.

West and Blaine join the Elite after tragedy hits home. They're sent to another planet to hit the aliens where it hurts. I won't lie, getting into this book took a little longer than expected, though it felt a little slow, I was still very curious and intrigued by the notion of the book.

I'm sure glad I stuck with it. Once they arrive and join the squadron, things start really picking up. Kyle meets his squadron leader Andrei and thongs get a bit more " heated". In the air and in Epsilon. Things aren't as they seem though, and it takes Andrei and Ogrufenka going down for things to really get "strange".

" What goods a gunner without his pilot "

It took a minute for my brain to wrap around the info as it was coming to me. I think I was as confused as Blaine was during everything. I think that was the beauty of the story. Political propaganda at its finest.

Though it was slow going into it for me, I give it 4 stars, mainly for originality and blowing my freaking mind
