When the mercenary Caledon meets a young man named Hadrian, he falls instantly, hopelessly in love with him. Black-haired and silver-eyed, Hadrian is unlike any man Caledon has seen before. His uncertain responses to Caledon's advances only make the mercenary more determined to pursue and win him.

But Hadrian is a mystery, and harbors untold secrets. He hails from an island inhabited by sorcerers and has come to Caledon’s city to recruit the mercenaries for a well-paying job offered by Hadrian’s father. Except the job is a lie. Hadrian is far more dangerous than his disposition suggests, and what he wants with Caledon and the mercenaries of Rhiad will forever change the land and set in motion a prophecy that will bind two men together in love, lust, and hatred…until death.

A previous version of this book was published as The Sorcerer’s Betrayal.
This book has been re-written and re-edited.

Excerpt

He could see now that he had erred when he had first tried to label Hadrian.

Caledon had been fascinated by the other man's apparent inexperience and naiveté. But the truth seemed more incredible. Hadrian was untouched―untouched by affection, untouched by desire. How this had come to be, Caledon couldn't imagine. But he knew it to be true. He felt it in his bones.

Nothing else could explain why Hadrian literally melted beneath his caresses. Every touch Caledon made upon the younger man's skin left Hadrian trembling and breathless. Why has no one done this before me?Caledon wondered as he eased open the stall door with his free arm wrapped firmly about Hadrian's back.

He should simply be grateful that it was he who had been the one to find Hadrian first. That was what his self-serving side told him. But a deeper, more empathetic part of him was saddened by the discovery. Everyone deserved the comforts of touch, of affection. Why hadn't anyone offered those things to Hadrian?

Caledon's body urged him to ignore the mystery. He wasn't trying to develop a permanent relationship with the other man. Hadrian would be gone in a few days. This would be but an interlude for them both.

Even so, Caledon vowed to make it something worth remembering.

The movie started, and as he’d guessed, it was crappy. But Carla was into it. She bounced in her seat and munched handfuls of popcorn. Neither Jazz nor Dash had gotten any, although Jazz had opted for the vanilla cola he and Carla both loved. Jazz kind of wished he’d gotten popcorn, since maybe it would have helped distract him from the warmth of Dash’s long, firm thigh just inches from Jazz’s leg. The heat kept spreading like a lava flow up to parts that didn’t need any more warming, and Jazz kept shifting from buttcheek to buttcheek.

Carla leaned over. “I got way too much popcorn. You guys want some?”

Dash stared skeptically at the huge bag Carla passed, but Jazz reached over, grabbed it, and clasped it like a life preserver, then held it out to Dash.

As two werewolves roared and attacked each other on the screen, Dash glanced at the offer, then slid a hand into the half-empty bag, dug around, and guided a handful of white kernels toward his mouth. Jazz dragged his eyes away from those lips that he could easily imagine devouring something other than popcorn. He dug his own hand into the bag, grabbed a handful, and shoved it into his mouth, spilling several puffs down his front.

Dash murmured, “Um, good.”

Jazz agreed. He dove for more as Dash did the same, and their hands met somewhere in the middle of the bag, bumping. They both froze.

Jazz held his breath. What to do? Just as he almost made a decision to pull his hand out, he—did he?—felt Dash’s finger move. The soft, warm digit might have caressed the palm of Jazz’s hand. Maybe. Now he really didn’t know what to do.

Two of Dash’s fingers dragged over Jazz’s palm, an area of his body that must have nerves stretching directly to his penis because the pressure produced an equal and opposite reaction. For a second, they sat there, frozen, Jazz’s whole brain dwelling somewhere between his thighs. Then Dash intertwined their fingers and Jazz thought he’d have an orgasm right there, every nerve-ending throbbing.

“Hey you guys, don’t bogart the popcorn.” Carla reached across Dash’s body toward the bag. Fortunately, her eyes remained fixed on the screen where two werewolves were stalking each other through the forest.

Dash managed to let go of Jazz’s fingers, and Jazz pulled his hand out in time to allow Carla to drag the bag away from his erection, which was so huge it could probably shove ten people out of the theater.

I will not spoil this book for anyone in my review. I won't be saying much about the story, but maybe more how I felt about it.

This wasn't my favorite one. In fact, I thought parts were WAY over the top. There was a few times I lost interest in it and I floated away. There was a few times I yelled that I knew what was happening. I never did that in any of the other books, it was always a complete mystery. I'm not even sure how I feel about the ending. It didn't necessarily have a solid closure. Could that be so these characters can split off into another series?
Only Cordelia knows. Maybe we should bust a SoS on her to get all the secrets?

That being said, I absolutely a-freaking-dore Levi and Dominic and their band of misfits. Especially Rebel, because she's the baddest bitch there is. Ever. While Levi may not be able to trust everyone, there a select few he can, and they are ride or die. I'm not sure what the future exactly holds for these two, but as I said above, I wouldn't mind a different set of stories, maybe one's less murder-y for them?

Random thoughts:
Minocqua, WI, and really anywhere up north, are gorgeous and you should definitely check that out ^_^

What happened to that f*cking banana bread? It's just sitting in Levi's drawer! }:‑)

REVIEWED BY:

As far as books about Gods go, I thought this one was rather...cute.
Lysandros, son to the Greek God, Hades, wasn't quite what I expected out of an immortal of the Underworld. Which was a good thing. No, there really isn't a Lysandros from actual Greek Mythology, and I like how they incorporated that into the story, about him maybe being "too new" for the Greek Myths before they fell to the wayside.

The one thing I thought was a little stale and could have been upgraded though was Zeus's bolt getting stolen and Hermes (or his descendants) being on it. (Ex: Percy Jackson)

That being said, I loved these new characters and Lys's sisters and the relationship between Lys and Theo. I also liked the way Hades and Persephone were portrayed in this story, as loving and in love with each other. I also like how these authors didn't use New York, but rather DC, as their base for the story. Seems that it is overused as where Mt. Olympus is based in newer versions. OH! and that Poseidon was a bloody Pirate :D

I will be over here patiently waiting for Prisoner of Shadows, Book 2 :)

THE HANDS WE'RE GIVEN

The Hands We're Given - O.E. Tearmann

O.E. Tearmann has a new MM (trans) hard sci fi/cyberpunk tale out, book one in their "Aces High, Jokers Wild" series: "The Hands We're Given."

Aidan Headly never wanted to be the man giving orders. That's fine with the Democratic State Force base he's been assigned to command: they don't like to take orders. Nicknamed the Wildcards, they used to be the most effective base against the seven Corporations owning the former United States in a war that has lasted over half a century. Now the Wildcards are known for creative insubordination, chaos, and commanders begging to be reassigned.

Aidan is their last chance. If he can pull off his assignment as Commander and yank his ragtag crew of dreamers and fighters together, maybe they can get back to doing what they came to do: fighting for a country worth living in.

Life's a bitch. She deals off the bottom of the deck. But you play the hands you're given.

The Hands We're Given meme - O.E. Tearmann

The dark shapes of three drones flitted over the junkyard, blotting out the stars. Aidan desperately turned the keys, slamming his foot on the accelerator. The truck’s engine finally revved. Kevin flung open the passenger side door and leapt inside. “Go, go, go!”

Aidan slammed it into reverse and hit the gas. They jumped backward. Once the truck was far enough away from the fence, he changed gears and wrenched the wheel around. They bumped and rattled into the night as fast as Aidan dared without the headlights on. The heat of the engine would make them easy to follow for the drones’ thermal cameras, but the short-range guard drones couldn’t go too far from their base of operation before their programming called them back. Aidan just hoped they could outrun them.

He gripped the steering wheel so hard it hurt. He could feel the suit tightening down against his skin. His heart pounded in his chest. Kevin’s breathing was ragged beside him. Another burst of bullets sprayed the ground right in front of them. Aidan yelped and yanked the wheel to avoid getting hit. The truck jittered to the side. Aidan slammed on the gas. The desert night sped past in a blur of blue and red under the starlight. Slowly, the whir of rotors faded into the distance. Aidan’s grip on the steering wheel began to relax. Kevin pulled his tab out of the bag and set it on the dashboard, watching as the screen flipped through the security channels they’d hacked into, keeping track of the location of dozens of drones.

Finally, Aidan pulled up under an overhang of red rock and cut the engine. The wide-range security drones were due to make their fly-over soon. Better to stop for a while and recover, get back on the road when it was safer.

They sat in silence for a long time, listening for rotors over the quiet buzz of the night insects. Aidan rested his arms on the steering wheel and propped his chin on his wrist, watching the star-studded sky.

“You all right?” Kevin breathed. At some point during the drive, he had deactivated his slick suit.

Aidan sighed and leaned back so he could manually flip his face screen up.”Yeah. Think so. Banged my knee pretty bad. Your shoulder?”

“Bruised. Doesn’t feel severe.” Kevin shrugged.

“Um, good,” Aidan whispered eventually.

So. They were alive. They’d gotten out with most of what they’d gone in for.

At the expense of a bad bruise across Kevin’s cheek, that or worse to his shoulder, and an action that could have caused so much more.

Slowly, some of his anger seeped back. He took a breath. “You scared the hell out of me back there and acted like a complete gamma, Kev. Don’t do that again.”

Kevin ducked his head in a slow nod. “I’m sorry, Aidan. I—When I saw you like that, I guess I panicked.”

Aidan sighed. Kevin was normally so level-headed. He’d been utterly cool on-Grid, when Aidan had been scared shitless.

So why had he acted like this out here?

On the tab screen, the red dot of a drone approached their location. They waited in breathless silence as the long-range drone passed, not even the sound of whirring to announce its presence. The red dot moved out of range.

Aidan breathed out. Kevin looked up with a smile. So close. They were so close.

“That’s the last of them. A very fine night’s work if I do say so.”

Aidan tried to smile, but it faltered. “I didn’t get the holo board. That was the part we needed most.”

Kevin smirked as he pulled the bag up from the floorboard and into his lap. He rifled quickly through the materials they had managed to grab, yanked, and pulled out the board with a wink.

“Oh, I don’t know about that.”

“What? How…?” Aidan breathed, feeling the wave of defeat that had been threatening lift.

“Fell down the pile when you did,” Kevin whispered, grinning. “I simply grabbed it up. After all, I am the requisitions officer. Snatching things is my forte.”

A rush of joy shot through Aidan. They’d done it. They’d gotten everything. Nose to nose with Kevin, he grinned.

“Holy shit, we- Holy shit! You… wow. Kevin, holy shit! This is like one of your vids!”

Kevin’s eyes glittered like silver in the low light. “You know, if this is a vid, I know how the scene ends.”

“Yeah?” Aidan asked, still giddy with relief.

Kevin was still smiling, his teeth white outlines in his grin. And he was leaning closer. Aidan could feel the heat of his skin, his breath.

“Heroes always get a kiss at the end of the adventure. That’s the convention.” Kevin tipped his head, eyes holding Aidan’s. “Would the hero like a kiss?”

Aidan froze. Was Kevin actually… Was he…?

He wet his lips. His voice escaped as a whisper. “Am I supposed to be a hero?”

Kevin’s smile was soft now, and he was so very close. “I don’t see anyone else in the driver’s seat. So you must be.” Then he pressed his lips against Aidan’s.

Kevin’s lips were hot. Aidan’s brain turned inside out. Kevin was kissing him.

Kevin had started kissing him.

This was real.

He leaned into the warmth with a pleasure that was almost pain. This was only going to be a second, but if only this second would last.

Softly, Kevin drew back. “Was that okay?”

Kevin’s whisper barely made it through the buzzing in Aidan’s brain. He gasped in a breath. “Um, okay. Yeah.” He swallowed hard and forced himself to sit up. "We-we should get going home…”

Kevin nodded, eyes still holding his as he drew away. “I suppose we should.”

Review

3.5*

This story features a not fully transitioned Trans, F2M, MC.

The author, I think, does a great job on the subject. While some of it made me slightly uncomfortable (at first) it also helped me to understand better. Making this not just a futuristic, dystopian story about survival, but also about self and peer acceptance.

Aidan struggles with being trans, both physically and mentally. He even has an AI psych app that halos in the form of his sister. I wish that were a real thing. Just think of all that guidance in the palm of your hand.

Aside from that struggle, he also now has to struggle in pulling a team that's falling apart together. In finding himself and acceptance with his love interest, he gains the confidence in himself and with guiding the team. He has the patience of a saint, that's for sure.

Now, that all being said. I find that a little hard to believe. Someone who suffers from such lack of confidence and panic attacks, I can't really see them guiding a group of grieving people. Luckily it's fiction, and in that perfect world, they heal themselves while healing others.

I would have loved to see a bit more world building as well. You kind of learned as the story went on, mostly in the form of a little boys poems. While cute, I just wished it had been more elaborated.

I really loved Kevin's obsession with pre-Dissolution culture. Music, movies, books, but mostly lost language. The way he talked, which is how we talk now, is so different than 150 years from now. It seems more poetic and pretty than functional. It also confuses his bunkmates and makes him look a little snooty.

My favorite character has to be Tweak though. I would really love her story, it seems like it would be a crazy ride. Lots of hurt/comfort going on there.

“Meow!”

There it was.

The sound that made my knees buckle.

He purred, neck stretched, eyes half-lidded.

With those cat ears, in his hair.

And the tail, that he flicked.

A ray of sun in the drizzling rain. I’d been a traveler, floating adrift, while he’d stayed in one place. How was I supposed to know he’d become my anchor? My light. My everything. But would I ever become his?

***As a standalone romance, “Black” features detailed adult m/m content, a hurt/comfort relationship as well as "kitty play."

Excerpt

I waited for Tony, curled up on the couch with my cat ears perched in my hair. It had been nearly an hour, and I was starting to get impatient. Every time my hard-on started to die down, a new thought of all the filthy stuff we could get into made it shoot back up. I felt lightheaded from the lack of blood in my brain.

The doorbell rang, and I shot off the couch, buzzing him in.

Moving onto my hands and knees, I crawled to the door and plucked it open, listening for Tony’s footsteps. I recognized the way he moved, and this was surely him. The sound of his heavy yet careful feet against the wood made my heart skip. I sat up with my knees together, palms resting on the floor in front of them. The eager kitty waiting for its Master to come home. If I had a tail, I would have been flicking it.

A sturdy knock faintly vibrated the door in the frame.

“Dima?” Tony called. He pushed the door more as he stepped in.

He made it over the threshold, and then he stopped, sucking in a loud breath. I couldn’t read his facial expression, but I imagined he was gaping. I doubted he expected me to answer the door naked, hard, and with my ears on.

“Dima?” he murmured. “Jesus….”

“Meow.” An eager greeting for Tony. I moved towards him, head butting against his legs before I twined myself around them. Once, twice, I circled around his legs. Ending in front of him, I reached out and dug my nails into his thighs. My back curled into a sharp arch as I looked up towards him, cocking my head to the side. I purred quietly.

Tony’s hand fanned through my hair, stroking it. “You’re too much,” he murmured.

Damn right I was.

I wasn’t going to make it easy for him to resist.

My hands brushed up, trailing over his cock. He moaned low, and my lips twitched towards a smirk. I nuzzled into his crotch, meowing again. He swelled under my touch while I scratched my nails down his thighs again. His fingers tried to tighten in my hair, but I turned away from him quickly.

Back facing him, I dropped my hands down and crawled towards the couch, letting him see the plug that peered from between my cheeks. Yeah, he wasn’t going to win this one.
