New Hopeland City may be the birthplace of Tech Shifter gear, but it isn’t the only place that likes to blend technology with folklore. Now, a new nightmare is stalking the streets…

When PI Cassie Tam is attacked on the way home one night, she expects the police to get involved. What she doesn’t expect is to be forced into acting as bait to lure out a lunatic in a tech-suit that’s literally out for blood. But past actions have consequences, and doing so may be the only way she can get a clean slate from the city’s law makers.

If only that didn’t mean having to face down a wannabe vampire.

“Nei hou gaau siu.”

When Lori smiles like that, her eyes take on a slight twinkle, making their pale blue tone feel warm and welcoming. That being the case, it takes me a moment to realise I didn’t understand a word she just said. Am I so drunk already? “Uh, sorry. What?”

Lori giggles and repeats, “Nei hou gaau siu.” When I stare blankly, she frowns and asks, “Is my pronunciation off? I was sure that was right.”

“What were you trying to say?”

“I was trying to tell you that you’re funny in Cantonese.”

And at that, the laughter spills out of me, uncontrolled to the point I have to bury my face in the table to muffle the sound. If we’d been in our usual haunt, Northern Main Street’s late-night café-cum-alternative hangout Tourniquet, I’d have let loose uninhibited. The people there look like an odd bunch when you’re viewing things from the outside, but if you spend enough time there, you soon realise they’re all really nice people with tastes and hobbies that fall outside the mainstream. Seeing as we’ve opted for Cartwright’s on Dunstone Avenue, though, I’m trying to hold back. Honestly, I am. I’m just not doing a good job of t.

The staff in Cartwright’s are lovely, but the clientele is a little less raucous than those at Tourniquet, and so I’m already drawing some confused looks by the time I wipe the tears from my eyes. “I’m sorry,” I say, “I’m sorry.”

“I’ve never been much good at languages. Oh God,” Lori sighs and shoots me a now far more nervous smile. “Put me out of my misery. What did I say?”

I shrug. “You probably told me I was funny in Cantonese.”

Lori tilts her head and says, “Okay, now I’m confused.”

“I don’t speak Cantonese.”

“Yes, you do.”

“I really don’t.”

“You really do. I mean, you can’t seriously be telling me you’ve been using diu in the Taiwanese sense?”

“No, no…,” I reply, waving my hands in frantic motions. “Wait. What does it mean in Taiwan?”

“It was old slang for cool.”

“Oh, right. No, I’m definitely using it the way you think.”

“So you do speak Cantonese then.”

“No, I swear in Cantonese. I couldn’t hold a conversation in it. My dad had a thing about me swearing. He hated it, even when I was an adult. It was the one thing that always made him roll his eyes at Mom. Anyway, he spoke Mandarin, English, and a little French, so my options for big kid words were kinda limited. I went to school with a guy named Tom Huang; he spoke Cantonese, so I got him to teach me the cool words. Dad probably got the gist of what I was saying, but I think he appreciated the ingenuity of it.”

And now, Lori laughs and buries her face in her hands. She shakes her head and says, “I am such an idiot.”

“Nah, it’s not like I’ve ever spoken Mandarin around you, so how would you know? Honestly, I know enough Mandarin to get by, but we always spoke English at home, so I just picked that up easier. Let’s see, though…you would have meant nǐ hěn gǎoxiào. Or if you wanted to be really over the top with it, nǐ jiӑng shénme dōu néng bӑ wŏ lè huài le. That’s ‘everything you say cracks me up.’”

Lori shakes her head. “I think I’ll stick to English.”

“I am sorry for laughing,” I say, taking her hand. “It was really sweet of you to try learning something in another language for me. Why that phrase, though?”

Lori lets out a short, gentle laugh, and replies, “Every time we’re together, you either do or say something to make me laugh, so I figured it was something I could guarantee I’d get to use.”

“I’ll get us another drink,” I blurt, and whip myself to my feet and away towards the counter. It was just a compliment, but still… Did I move quick enough to stop her seeing how red my cheeks are?

“Nǐ hěn gǎoxiào,” Lori giggles in broken Mandarin.

I guess I was too slow. Diu.

Jack Reardon uncovers secrets for a living, and the Meta-State spy is pretty good at it. Or rather he thought so until he met Ethan Blade—assassin, warrior, enigma. The unlikely pair have decided to give living together a shot, but Jack’s not entirely certain what he’s gotten himself into—or exactly who he’s in it with.

Jack’s worries are compounded when he’s assigned to a police strike force hunting a serial killer. With each new puzzle piece, Jack considers the true nature of a serial killer—and how similar it is to an assassin. To one particular assassin who’s having trouble adjusting to retirement. Jack’s unsure how to help Ethan—or if he even can.

When the killer strikes close to home, Jack must race against the clock to stop another murder, despite the price someone has put on his head. Could the matters be connected? Is a certain assassin at the centre of both? Surrounded by killers, the only one Jack wants near disappears, leaving Jack drowning in secrets. He’ll have to do what he does best—unravel the secrets, including Ethan’s—to stop the killer and save the life he and Ethan have only just begun to build.

Settling back, Jack eyed the dancer contemplatively. The youth was, at most, twenty and all long limbs and lean torso shown off perfectly by an outfit that was, basically, a leather harness to hang a series of thin chains off and a considerately generous thong of black satin. There was strength in his slender body, lifting him effortlessly off the table to twirl around the pole in tight formation. His legs curled in a suggestive manner as he spiraled down and landed on the table, legs on either side of Jack, back arched. He looked at him with half-lidded, challenging eyes.

Admitting the artfulness of the display, Jack leaned forwards and tucked a baht note into the dancer’s harness. With a wink, the dancer spun around and rolled so he ended on his back in front of Lewis, head dangling off the table and all but in the man’s lap. He smiled up at Lewis invitingly.

“Jesus,” Lewis hissed.

Jack handed over a note. “Just tuck it somewhere safe and he’ll leave you alone.”

Wincing, Lewis shoved the money under a strap of leather and sat back hastily. The dancer’s smile widened, and he blew him a kiss. Then, with a sinuous little wiggle, he was back on his feet, dancing around the pole and dispensing some well-paid-for attention on the couple of other men at the table.

“I swear,” Lewis said when they were alone. “Last time you ever organise something like this.”

Jack shrugged as the waitress came over. “Can I get you gentlemen something?”

“Scotch, straight up.” Lewis stared fixedly at her as if he could banish every other man in the room.

“Bourbon,” Jack said when she turned to him.

“I won’t be long, gentlemen.” Then she walked away, with Lewis’s gaze glued to her back.

When their drinks arrived, both made a show of sipping the liquor, but neither let more than a discreet trickle pass their lips.

As the dancer sashayed past them with a hip thrust and welcoming smile, Lewis leaned in close. “How long?”

“As long as it takes,” Jack murmured back. “Just try to look not so uncomfortable.”

“I’m not uncomfortable.” Lewis sounded about as convincing as Jack had when claiming there was no boyfriend.

“For what it’s worth, I didn’t pick it. Is it my fault Theta Subject likes these sorts of places?”

Lewis grumbled but let it go.

Their dancer was tireless, slinking and spinning for their entertainment, always with a smile and wink for the men ogling him. By the time Jack caught sight of Theta Subject entering the club, he’d tucked a thousand baht into the young man’s outfit while Lewis silently objected to each tip.

With a small nod, Jack indicated their prey to Lewis. Between them, they kept an eye on Theta Subject as he made his way across the room and to a table like their own. He immediately tucked money into the thong of the dancer and sat down, waving for a drink without having to tell the waitress what he wanted. Clearly a popular regular, Theta Subject became the object of the dancer’s attention. The young man in a barely there police uniform all but ignored the other patrons at his table and gyrated for Theta Subject alone. A drink was delivered with a lingering caress along the man’s shoulders from the waitress.

It had to be the tips, Jack reasoned as he watched Theta Subject absorb all the attention from the staff on that side of the room. There wasn’t a lot else to recommend him, on the surface at least. Middle-aged, portly around the middle, stick thin legs, balding, sweaty-pale. It was conceivable he had a winning personality, but considering who he was and what he’d done to get on the Office’s hit list, Jack doubted it.

“Got to be the money, right?” Lewis whispered, mimicking Jack’s thoughts.

Jack snorted and feigned another sip of bourbon.

Theta Subject held out longer than Jack guessed he would, downing three drinks before producing one of the black cards. It was scarcely clear of his pocket before the dancer was off the table and hauling Theta Subject towards the back of the room. There, a bouncer took the card and opened a door for them. The amorous couple disappeared through it post-haste.

“Now?” Lewis asked.

Jack shook his head. “Give the man some time.”

Lewis groused but kept his mouth shut. Jack waited nearly ten minutes, then, catching the eye of their dancer, produced his own card.

Eyes lighting up, the dancer slid off the table and right into Jack’s lap. He kept dancing, rocking on Jack in time to the music. If Jack hadn’t been working, it probably would have been enticing. As it was, Jack gently pushed the young man to his feet, standing as well.

“Won’t be long,” he said to Lewis with a leer.

The dancer, snuggling into Jack’s side with a determined wiggle, pouted. “I’ll treat you good, sir.”

“Or maybe longer.” Jack winked as he turned away. “Behave yourself.”

This is one of my absolute favorite series of this year, and pretty much all time, and there is a reason for that... L.J. Hayward GIVES GREAT STORY!!!

I think my favorite part of this story was how each chapter rotated between the  "Before" or "After". You're probably wondering: Before and After what? I won't be the one ruining that for you though :)

It kind of starts in the middle of the story and one goes backwards through the before chapters while the other (after) works forward, and then it kind of meets towards the end to where it started and then moves forward more, if that makes sense LOL
The way it unfolds, I swear I thought they were going to tear me apart!

I was so scared for these two, LJ kind of leaves you with impressions of one thing happening which may lead to another thing. and the whole time you're thinking "no! Jack wouldn't do that!" And "no way, Ethan wouldn't do that!"
I loved and hated all the second guessing. Loved it, because I was so entranced by the story and hated because I didn't want to happen what I thought might happen.

Ethan is still an enigma, but we learn oh so much about his past, finally!
Even though this story unfolds and tells so much, there's still more to tell, at least that's the impression I'm left with. I really hope so because I seriously can NOT get enough of these guys.

This series is so freaking brilliant I'd love to shout it from a rooftop if it didn't make me look like a nutter!!

After the hard winter of 1888 ended Alby Boyle’s work as a Nebraska ranch hand, he returned to New York City in search of his long-lost family. His mother and brothers are nowhere to be found, however, and after Alby’s years of absence, Five Corners no longer feels like home. His prospects seem as dim as the nighttime alleys.

When Alby pauses to admire an angel ornament in a department store window’s Christmas display, he meets Xeno Varnham-Summerfield. Wealthy, handsome, and enthusiastic, Xeno brings Alby some temporary cheer. But for Alby to achieve his dreams of love and a real home, well, that may take a bit of holiday magic.

The Christmas Angel Series

In 1750, a master woodcarver poured all his unrequited love, passion, and longing into his masterpiece—a gorgeous Christmas angel for his beloved’s tree. When the man he loved tossed the angel away without a second thought, a miracle happened. The angel was found by another who brought the woodcarver True Love.

Since then, the angel has been passed down, sold, lost and found, but its magic remains. Read the romances inspired by (and perhaps nudged along by) the Christmas angel through the years. Whether it’s 1700s England (Eli Easton's Christmas Angel), the 1880’s New York (Kim Fielding’s Summerfield’s Angel), the turn-of-the-century (Jordan L. Hawk’s Magician’s Angel), World War II (L.A. Witt’s Christmas Homecoming), Vietnam-era (N.R. Walker’s Soldier’s Wish), the 1990’s (Anyta Sunday’s Shrewd Angel), or 2018 (RJ Scott’s Christmas Prince), the Christmas angel has a way of landing on the trees of lonely men who need its blessing for a very Merry Christmas and forever HEA.

The blasted angel refuses to leave him be, behaving not at all like an inanimate object should.

Alec Allston is resigned to the fact that his love will ever be a river that flows out and never flows in. All he wanted to do was create a special gift so that a small part of himself could be with his unattainable and noble beloved, always. But when the gift keeps showing back up at his shop in the hands of a windblown and rugged thief-taker, Alec will need to reconsider his conviction that love is destined to remain an ethereal ideal.

About Eli

Having been, at various times and under different names, a minister’s daughter, a computer programmer, a game designer, the author of paranormal mysteries, a fan fiction writer, and organic farmer, Eli has been a m/m romance author since 2013. She has over 30 books published.

Eli has loved romance since her teens and she particular admires writers who can combine literary merit, genuine humor, melting hotness, and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story. She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time. She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, bulldogs, cows, a cat, and lots of groundhogs.

In romance, Eli is best known for her Christmas stories because she’s a total Christmas sap. These include “Blame it on the Mistletoe”, “Unwrapping Hank” and “Merry Christmas, Mr. Miggles”. Her “Howl at the Moon” series of paranormal romances featuring the town of Mad Creek and its dog shifters has been popular with readers. And her series of Amish-themed romances, Men of Lancaster County, has won genre awards.

In 2018 Eli hopes to do more of the same, assuming they reschedule the apocalypse.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing Eli can't write!

Her last book had me on the edge with Boy Shattered and this one had me in the most hopeful, Christmas-y mood. It's not my first Christmas read by her either, but it IS my first historical, and I'm not BIG on historical, so I'm not a huge judgement of accuracy or anything, but, She just seems to be able to write any trope, and rocks it.

This is about an artist who's about to give up, but is visited by an angel during his lowest moment. In return, he makes a likeness of her as a special gift to his "first love" to remember them by. Unaware that it's unrequited, until a stranger shows up with the angel... Not once, but twice.

John is basically thief -runner, what I come to conclude as a sort of police officer. They're trolling the shores looking for some items that may have started a crime spree, but what John finds is something entirely different.

A good motto for John is "never judge a book by it's cover". He may seem big and gruff and tough, but he has a lot of soft spots. Especially for his gang of misfits that he's housed with. I think I loved that part the most. Also, the way he courts Alec, the small things he brings for him daily. I like his style, I think it's the small things that matter, not huge gestures and I thought they were really sweet.

This is a standalone, but part of the Christmas Angel series, so I'm dying to get my hands on Kim Fielding's story next :)

Thank gods for my de-puffing eye serum, because my heart just got kicked in the ass and I'm going to look like shyt Tomorrow!

Suki has been on my author watch list forever. I own many-a-fleet books, but I haven't had the chance to read them yet. When the opportunity came-knocking to do an anniversary tour for Foxes I was like "aww suki-suki, let's do it!!" ((pun totally intended))

I'm glad I did. Meeting Danny/Loki is kind of life changing. I think he's my new favorite "person".
Danny is homeless and his best friend is a rent boy who sees beyond the "slow kid" who likes to fix things and scarring on his face. Dashiel saw his heart and the fact he smells of flowers and couldn't hate a soul. When Dashiel goes missing and his body shows up in the wastelands, Danny makes it his mission to find his killer.

While out and about taking notes in his pad, he gets called over by one of Dashiel's friends, one of the guys who loves picking on Danny. This time it's to offer him a job helping fix something for a friend. This friend changes Danny's life. We meet Micky, transplant rent boy from the US. To Danny he sparkles like no one has ever sparkled before. Only it's not easy for Danny to talk, trust, or love openly. The chemistry between them is a slow burn, but no less intense. It's such an incredible journey to watch. The "realness" of this book is magnificent and the way it's written just feels so intense. I can't really explain the style it's written in, but it feels deep and raw and captivating and I loved every second of it, even the painful seconds.

Danny and Micky become closer and Micky even helps Danny go "shark hunting". Danny even finds Micky in a horrible way, a few times, and it just hurts your heart. But it's Danny that keeps it going, you just seriously cannot NOT love him. Things look shitty, but he works through them. He's so brave and he doesn't even know it, and that is why he's so endearing. The fact that he couldn't even hate Dashiel's "killer", which in turn makes him want to change, says even more about Danny. I just want to squeeze him, but I don't think he'd like that!

I even loved how realistic Micky's ailment was, even at the end. He didn't just magically "get over it" in the end, no. He struggles to fight his internal sharks, and will continue for a long time. They end on a high note, but with a long way to go. It couldn't have ended better.

I give this 4.5 "what is normal" stars!!

New Release + Giveaway ~ Santa Daddy by Keira Andrews

Length: 30,000 words approx.

Blurb

Mall Santas aren’t supposed to be hot.

Hunter Adams is hopelessly adrift after college. He’s still a virgin, can’t find a real job, and has no clue what to do with his life. In desperation, he returns to his humiliating old job as an elf at the Santa's Village in his hometown's dying mall. The Santa on the job is an unexpectedly sexy lumberjack, twice Hunter's size and age. He makes Hunter feel very naughty—too bad he's grumpy and intimidating.

Years after the tragic death of his partner, Nick Spini has his beagle and long, hard days on his Christmas tree farm. That’s plenty. But he can’t refuse a loyal friend’s plea for help and finds himself filling in as Santa at the local mall. Despite Nick's attempt to stay aloof, the beautiful, anxious young man playing elf brings out his long-dormant daddy instincts.

When a surprise blizzard traps them alone in Nick’s isolated forest home, their attraction burns even brighter. Will they surrender to the sizzling connection between them and find the release and comfort they crave?

Santa Daddy is a holiday gay romance from Keira Andrews featuring an age gap, steamy m/m first times, daddy role-playing and light spanking, Christmas romance feels, and of course a happy ending.

* 3.5*

If you're looking for a somewhat short, fun, sexy Christmas read, then try this one out.

Hunter has come home for the holidays after interning in the big city. He's pretty much given up hope trying to find something in his field for his degree. He calls up his old boss looking for anything to make a little money. Seems he has his old elf gig available at the mall.

His old boss, John, has also suckered his hermit-esque friend, Nick, (who is also kind of an asshole) into being Santa for their last year of being open. John then helps talk Nick into taking Hunter on at his tree farm.

Things don't really start out well for these two, as I said, Nick's kind of an asshole. But when Hunter shows up at the farm in a bad way, Nick quickly changes his tune, and thus begins our affair.

Yes, it's called Santa Daddy, yes Hunter calls him daddy... But here it isn't a lifestyle, it's just bedroom play.

Things happen fast between the MCs, but it doesn't feel rushed. I liked the development between these two.

I won't say this is the greatest story ever written, but it was fun and will definitely get you in the holiday spirit, especially with all those Christmas trees :)
