Five Fun Facts about New Heights

·         I haven’t actually been to the little New York airport this book is set in, so I had to use Google Earth to figure out what it looked like. Even so, a lot of its design relies on the fact that all airports are basically the same.

·         When getting into the mood to write this book, I listened to a lot of Silversun Pickups and Coheed & Cambria.

·         I originally wrote a scene where my character Mika described one time he had sex in a public bathroom, but I ended up cutting it because it didn’t fit the mood of the story.

·         I usually race through writing novellas, but this one took an unusually long time to finish. I added lots of little details that I hope shine through. Mostly puns that will probably make everyone groan, ha ha.

·         I briefly considered titling this “Up in the Air,” but that seemed more suited to a book about juggling or acrobatics.

About Quinn Anderson

Quinn Anderson is an alumna of the University of Dublin in Ireland and has a master’s degree in psychology. She wrote her dissertation on sexuality in popular literature and continues to explore evolving themes in erotica in her professional life.

A nerd extraordinaire, she was raised on an unhealthy diet of video games, anime, pop culture, and comics from infancy. Her girlfriend swears her sense of humor is just one big Joss Whedon reference. She stays true to her nerd roots in writing and in life, and frequently draws inspiration from her many fandoms, which include Yuri on Ice, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Buffy, and more. Growing up, while most of her friends were fighting evil by moonlight, Anderson was kamehameha-ing her way through all the shounen anime she could get her hands on. You will often find her interacting with fellow fans online and offline via conventions and Tumblr, and she is happy to talk about anything from nerd life to writing tips. She has attended conventions on three separate continents and now considers herself a career geek. She advises anyone who attends pop culture events in the UK to watch out for Weeping Angels, as they are everywhere. If you’re at an event, and you see a 6’2” redhead wandering around with a vague look on her face, that’s probably her.

Her favorite authors include J.K. Rowling, Gail Carson Levine, Libba Bray, and Tamora Pierce. When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling, cooking, spending too much time on the internet, playing fetch with her cat, screwing the rules, watching Markiplier play games she’s too scared to play herself, and catching ’em all.

Excerpt

The book was whispering again.

It wasn’t exactly a book anymore, since its pages and binding had been consumed in the fire and the only remnant of it was in his head. But Fletcher didn’t have another word for it than “book,” so that was what he was calling it to himself. Out loud, he tried to talk about it as little as possible.

He hadn’t learned Gothic, and he wasn’t going to, especially not in order to understand the things whispered in his brain by an evil, magic book. Tristan Hunter had assured him that the book hadn’t been evil, just the grimoire of a power-hungry witch who had died hundreds of years ago. Fletcher was hard pressed to see the difference.

The pursuit of power rarely ended well. To see that, a person only had to look at what had happened with the book in the last twenty-five years. They didn’t know how many people Hector MacKenzie had killed in his desperation, but it was at least two, with another planned.

And Fletcher had killed a man over it too, which was how he’d ended up in the position of being driven crazy by a dead witch whispering Gothic straight into his brain.

“Shut up,” he mumbled to it, as though that ever had any effect. The damned thing just kept rambling, like it didn’t understand him any better than he understood it. It probably didn’t. When it whispered to him at the station, it was all he could do to refrain from banging his head against the nearest filing cabinet.

He was sitting at his desk, trying to catch up with the massive backlog of paperwork he’d accumulated over the previous month. With his partner on medical leave for more than half of December, he’d fallen so far behind on everything he wasn’t sure it was possible to catch up. Every time he had a chance, the voice would start again, like a monologuing movie villain.

He had only told Devon, Jesse, and Isla about the whispering, but even to them, he’d downplayed how bad it was. How sometimes it drowned out actual conversations he was trying to have. How sometimes it chanted in a way that sounded like magic to him, and he felt things in his body shifting unnaturally. He shuddered.

About The Author

Sam wrote her first fantasy epic with her best friend when she was ten. Like almost any epic fiction written by a ten year old, it was awful. She likes to think she’s improved since then, if only because she has better handwriting now.

If she’s not writing, she’s almost certainly either reading or lost down a wikipedia rabbit hole while pretending to research for a novel.

I thought this book was totally adorable. 6 year old Caroline was a spunky little thing that you just couldn't help not loving. Adam was kind of a prick in the beginning, but while you were in his POV it was kind of funny. He seems to be a man of few words (which is kind of odd for a first grade teacher, but maybe not a relationship stunted one). I don't think he quite knew how to take Kyle and Caroline's energy. Kyle doesn't quite have a filter so the things that come out of his mouth can be quite awkward, but funny and Dare I say, adorable? As the chapters move back and forth through their different POVs it's fun to see. Kyle quirky and energetic and the perfect (single) dad to a 6 year old girl. He's fun yet stern and even a good influence in his dad's life. Kyle is all about the eating healthy and taking care of his family, Caroline is the most important thing to him. While Kyle and Adam have both had some terrible things happen to them, this story didn't feel that dramatic to me. Kyle found it odd that the entire town wanted to help him, he didn't quite understand this at first. He wanted everyone out of his business and not pity him when it came to Caroline and her mother. It took him a fight with Adam and a 6 hour drive to Richmond to understand what he would be giving up if he left again. All in all This was a very sweet, low drama, light read. About Allison Temple Allison Temple is a romance writer from Toronto, Ontario. She lives with her very patient husband and the world’s neediest cat. What goes where

If I suddenly disappear it’s probably because I ended up on a government watch list somewhere thanks to my Google-history. Research for a book like Where Death Meets the Devil can swing in some pretty odd directions. From You Tube videos about self-defence to message boards discussing pros and cons of various hand guns. From testing out salted caramel fudge recipes* to the Australian Defence Force. I read books about the Australian SAS and looked up personality disorders. In the space of a couple of hours I Googled domestic terrorism in India, US military bases in Colombia and socio-political connections between Russia and China. Fingers crossed the file of my digital explorations is flagged as ‘writer’. ;)

Of course, everything I read or even looked into didn’t make it into the book. I did a fair bit of reading on Saint Thomas Christians and all that made it into the book was their cross, tattooed on Jack’s back. Assassination verses targeted killing was a debate I never found the space for. I researched the start-up procedure for the Kamov Ka-52 helicopter and it was reduced to a few lines in the story. I looked up so many weapons specs I had to keep referring back to them just to remember which fact went with which gun, then only to cut most of them out. More pleasurable was deciding what supercar Ethan Blade was going to drive. I enjoyed that research so much, he ended up with six of the silly things. And I have endless thanks for all those folks posting videos of their Ferraris, Porsches and Aston Martins on You Tube, because I doubt me stalking said cars around town would have ended well.

* that was purely for me because once I wrote it into the story, I had to eat it! And bless all the folks at work who kept eating the fudge I forced on them because, who knew, I actually have some self-restraint. ;)

Review:

This is my first book by LJ Hayward and I do believe I'll be stalking the fook out of the rest of her books. This book is fast paced and so full of twists and turns, you're not sure if you're up or down. Who's the bad guy and who isn't? A moral assassin who loves cars and animals? whaaaaat? (Sheila the camel was of my favorite characters!) The book starts out present day, then the next chapter jumps a year. The following chapter goes back a year then the next back to present. I absolutely loved this. Things that were being said in the present didn't quite make sense until the next chapter in the past cleared it all up. The layers in this book are just unbelievable. I'm super impressed with the smart writing. Ethan was a charming sociopath (even though I don't believe that's what he was). "You're half right, Jack" If you've ever read DarkSoul by Aleksandr...picture Silvio, but witty and a bit charming and a touch of some weird innocence. This book is loads of excitement and I can't wait for it to release. I hope people love it as much as I did! Another fave for the year! About L.J. Hayward

L.J. Hayward has been telling stories for most of her life. Granted, a good deal of them have been of the tall variety, but who’s counting? Parents and teachers notwithstanding, of course. These days, the vast majority of her story telling has been in an honest attempt to create fun and exciting ways of entertaining others (and making money).

As such, she is still a mad (always provoked!) scientist in a dungeon laboratory (it has no windows—seriously, the zombie apocalypse could be going on outside and she’d have nary a clue) who, on the rare occasions she emerges into the light, does so under extreme protest and with the potential hazard of bursting into flames under the Southeast Queensland sun.
