New Release & Review ~ Two-Man Advantage (Players of LA) by Leigh Carman

eBook: 200 Pages
Published: July 7th 2017 by Dreamspinners Press
Male/Male Romance, Sports- Hockey, BDSM, Contemporary

Cover Artist: Catt Ford

A hockey star skating on the edge of a catastrophe.

A PR specialist so adept, he’s called “the Fixer.”

Working together will be the biggest challenge of both their careers.

The LA Vikings hockey team is fed up the violent outbursts of its huge, intimidating enforcer, Viktor Novak. Hounded by a homophobic and domineering father, Viktor takes out his frustrations by spilling blood—on and off the ice. Now he has one last chance to clean up his image, or his career is over.

That’s where Bowen Miller comes in.

Bo has taken on the hardest cases and succeeded—by micromanaging every aspect of a client’s life—at the expense of his own happiness. But in the stubborn, hot mess that is Viktor, Bo might have met his match—both in and out of the bedroom. One man is out of control, and one controls everything. But when sex and attraction come into play, those roles are open to negotiation.

Two-Man Advantage is book three in the Players of LA series, but can be read as a standalone.

LA Vikings hockey player Viktor Novak is literally on thin ice with his team. The “big guys upstairs” have had enough of his antics on the ice. An ultimatum is passed down to his coach for him to change his ways or he would be watching the game from the bench instead of playing.

In comes Bowen Miller “The Fixer” to help Vik get his s*** straight.

These are two alpha males through and through. Both fighting for dominance at every turn...except when things get hot. I was not expecting the slight Dom/Sub aspect of their sexy times. And my did those sexy times get hot!! I don't know how many times I had to check and make sure my AC was on...lol.

Viktor has an a** for a father. He puts him down at every turn and when dear old dad walks in on Viktor and Bo in a rather compromising position, things between Vik and his father go from bad to worse. My heart absolutely broke for Viktor for the way his father treated him. That man absolutely made my skin crawl!

Bowen also had a few parental issues that made him the man that he had become. He was not the relationship kinda guy, but after some time with Vik, he couldn't picture his life without him.

I really enjoyed this book and now plan on going backwards to read the rest of the series. You have a new fan Leigh!!!

I give this book 4 Hot Hockey Stars!!!

PROLOGUE
He glanced up at the evening sky. A haze enveloped the quarter moon, giving everything an ethereal glow. Though the night would be considered sultry, it lent itself to romance, walking hand in hand with someone you cared for, sharing whispered words, promises that might last an evening or be the foundation for a lifetime commitment. These people had no idea how quickly something like love could be ripped away, how those things said to one another would be worth less than the air you spent on saying them.
He shook his head. Now he needed to focus, not lose himself in memories of what might have been if things had been different. God, how he wished things could have been different.
The street could only be described as quaint. Small houses, each nearly identical to the next, but with a few tweaks that marked them as individual. The place he focused on had a small flowerbed, bursting with a variety of a flower he knew, but couldn’t recall the name. Tulips, maybe?
The slate gray siding, the maroon shutters on the windows, and the solar-powered pathway to the door that lit up in beautiful colors at night. The overall effect could only be described as charming. A lot of love went into making the house something special. It reminded him of what he’d lost.
He’d taken refuge in a house across from the home for six days, getting the lay of the land, taking note of the occupants’ arrival and departure schedule. Then every night, he drifted off, thinking about the place. It had been a dream of theirs, to own a little farm of their own, where no one would send them off to the corners of the world to handle problems. And for one very brief instant, they’d achieved it. But that dream had died in more ways than one. One day it was there, the next it was gone, as ephemeral as if it had never existed.
He tugged the collar of his black jacket and wished for a cool breeze. The earlier rain had sent the humidity soaring, and sweat was building up under his bulletproof vest, matting the sparse hairs. What he wouldn’t give for a tall glass of iced tea about now. He tried again, lifting the bottom of the vest up, hoping to let a little air in to cool him down, but nothing helped. He glanced at his watch. He’d need to make his move tonight. No way could he stand to be in this place any longer. The memories and wistful dreams alone threatened to drown him, but this heat had him sweating to the point where even he could smell himself. When he grabbed a coffee at the convenience store down the street while his target was out, the man behind the counter had a hand on the phone. Probably thought he was a vagrant. He sure as hell looked like one. He hadn’t showered in days, and his dark blond hair felt greasy to the touch. The beard he’d grown over the last year hadn’t seen a razor either. He looked like shit.
When he heard the hum of an engine on the quiet street, he crouched down. Though his patience had long ago come to an end, he needed to see this through. He would wait as he’d been trained, even if every fiber of his being rebelled against the idea. Still, he was an assassin, and he had a job to do.
The woman—Sarah, according facts he’d assembled—slid from the driver’s seat, her blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. She laughed at something the other occupant shouted, then opened the rear door of the van. It took several minutes for her to get set, then she stepped away as a ramp slid down to allow the man in the back to wheel out and be lowered to the ground. She bent over and kissed him, then walked to the passenger side where she took a baby from the car seat. She held the child up, and then blew a raspberry on his belly, which caused the kid to laugh and wiggle. Regret tore through him. He wished there could be another way, but two months ago he’d approached the man—Daniel Tollifson—there had been angry words exchanged, as well as the threat of police involvement. He couldn’t allow that, because there would be no one else to take down his ultimate target.
He forced himself to focus on the here and now. He needed to remain detached. Better to not let facts like these intrude on his mission—a few weeks ago, he’d gone to Daniel, begging for information. He’d been rebuffed. That wouldn’t be the case today.
If the man wouldn’t help him when he asked, then he’d have to find another way to get his message across. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a photo of a man whose smile had never wavered. Terry had been his whole world, and then had been ripped away from him in a matter of moments. All he wanted had been the name of the person responsible. Why couldn’t Daniel see he wasn’t asking for much? How would he feel if it had been his wife? Or his child?
Daniel disengaged himself from the ramp, and Sarah started to come around to the other side. It had to be now.
He’d run out of tears a lifetime ago, but again he wished he had another alternative. He didn’t. He raised the rifle and peered through the sights. The woman and baby had gotten too near the man, and he refused to hurt the innocent. Not like Terry had been. He lowered his weapon.
He waited while the two were engaged in conversation. She touched her husband’s face, then bent down to blow a raspberry on his cheek, which had them both laughing. She held out the baby to him and gestured to the chair. He frowned, shook his head, and waved her off. She laughed and stuck out her tongue, dodging the swat he attempted to lay on her ass, then strode to the house, singing something loud and only slightly off-key. Her husband yelled something about the neighbors, and she merely laughed. He could see the obvious love the two of them shared, and that made what he had to do even more difficult.
Regret tore through him. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, no longer sure who the sympathy was for.
She opened the front door, and her husband began to roll toward the house. Now would be his chance. Despite his misgivings, he had to take it. He again raised the rifle, closed one eye, and locked in on his target. The wheelchair stopped at the curb, and the man tried unsuccessfully to move it. He called out to Sarah, an edge of frustration in his voice. She laughed and took eight steps toward him when the trigger of the M24 he held in slightly trembling hands depressed, and a loud bang split the quiet suburban street. Less than a second passed before Daniel’s head exploded, blood and other materials spattering his wife and child. For a moment, she stood there, eyes wide. She gripped the baby close to her chest, and then screamed.
Before the echo died away, he had already scurried off into the night.
It wasn’t a perfect shot. He could hear Terry cursing at him, making him do it again and again until he got it right. But Terry had died, and though two years had passed, he would finally be avenged.
Daniel Tollifson had been the first, but there was no doubt he wouldn’t be the last. Though he didn’t want to kill anyone, there had to be a penalty for those who refused to help him get justice for Terry. He needed to track down and eliminate the person who’d been responsible.
No matter who had to die in the process.

New Release, Review + Giveaway ~ Promises Part 3 by AE Via

Author A.E. Via
Title:  Promises Part 3
M/M GAY CONTEMPORARY/ACTION
Edited by: Tina Adamski
Cover Artist – Jay Aheer
PAGE COUNT – 222
Release Date: June 30, 2017

Synopsis
A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story.
The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.

Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.

Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?

Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable.

After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.

When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: When Ford and Dana connect, no fugitive can hide from the hunter and his watchman.

This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.
Disclaimer: This book is about MM romance, albeit there is a very brief MF scene.

Excerpt
Dana tossed his napkin into his empty plate. He waved to the server for the check since Jessica appeared to be finished with her food.
“Oh, wait. I wanted another glass of wine. It’s been a day, sweetie.”
“I’m ready to go, Jess. It’s been a fucked-up day for me too, ya know.” Not that you asked. “I wrestled with a three-hundred-pound man today. I’m really tired.” Dana turned his mug up to down his last gulp when he was hit hard in the center of his back by a hand heavy enough to leave a bruise. Most of his beer flew out his mouth from the surprise impact, jerking him forward so hard the table rattled. Jessica gasped, her eyes lurching upwards at the hulking figure behind him. Dana knew who the fuck it was.

“My fault. Just wanted to say bye,” Ford grumbled. He clamped his thick hand down on Dana’s shoulder and squeezed, but Dana didn’t give him the satisfaction of the pained grunt that threatened to escape his clenched mouth. “You two have a good night.”
Ford walked away, Brian right behind him. Brian gave Dana a quick nod and kept moving. The few people gathered near the door hurried out of their path. One guy even stopped to hold open the door for them.

“Well that was childish and uncalled for,” Jessica said, looking repulsed and offended. “Are you okay, sweetie?”

“Of course, I’m fine.” Dana kept his growl low. He wiped the beer off his chin with the back of his hand, glaring at Ford’s broad back. Motherfucker.

Promises part 3, Featuring Dana and Ford with a little side of Brian (Ford's brother)

This series has a lot of similarities between each book. You can expect the same tone, adrenaline rush level, alpha-ness and an HEA. But what makes each book unique is the set of characters it features.

Whats unique about Dana and Ford is their partnership and habit of antagonizing each other. Ford more on the gruff side because he's a bit disappointed in Dana, and Dana on the teasing side, just trying to get a rise (and mostly a smile) out of Ford. What starts off as jibes to get under each others skin, Dana calling Ford "old man" and Ford calling Dana "brat", turns into something more intimate and flirty endearments for each other. I thought it was incredibly adorable (don't tell Ford i said that)

Dana, it seems, doesn't like to be "alone", so he ends up back with his girlfriend, Jessica.
Jessica is a snooty rich b*tch who just seems to be silently getting back at her father for dating a "bad boy". She is only using Dana and doesn't really seem to care about the guy underneath.
This is what frustrates Ford. He knows Dana can do so much better and doesn't understand why he's wasting time with this girl. Jessica is going to be someone you guys will absolutely LOVE to HATE. She's a snotty user and i think she gets off pretty easy, considering. Though I also like how Dana doesn't care enough about her anymore to make a big deal out of things. She isn't worth his ire, and it shows a maturity to him.

Another difference in this book is Brian, Ford's little brother. He's the one with mute-ism caused by a stint in the war. He gets a bit of a side story in here, which leads me to believe he may get his story next. What I love about stories like this is actually being in the actions in their heads. What they feel about not being able to talk, what they would like to say, and how it makes them feel to not be able to, and the ways they do actually communicate with others. There's an intimacy there between you and the character, getting an inside view of their struggle. You become a part of them and the story, and I really, really hope Brian gets his story!!

I give PP3 a 4.5 Bratty Stars

“I want to try something new,” Ryan says.
Daniel stops mincing the garlic to look over his shoulder. “Something new for you or something new for us?”
“Us,” Ryan says.
They’re in Daniel’s apartment this weekend, and Daniel offered to make dinner to draw out their time together a little bit longer. They normally part ways midafternoon on Sundays, but as soon as Daniel mentioned he was cooking, it was easy to convince Ryan to stay. Daniel has thought about pressing his luck and seeing if he could get Ryan to stay the night, but it seems like too much of a risk.
They’ve never stayed the night when there was work the next morning, and Daniel’s not going to be the first to bring it up. Besides, it probably would be more hassle than it’s worth. He’d have to figure out how to fit a second person into his morning routine, and he’s gotten it planned to the minute over the past few years. It would be too disruptive to change it. At least, that’s what he tells himself to keep from blurting out an invitation to stay.

Daniel returns to carefully mincing his garlic.
“I don’t want you to touch yourself this week,” Ryan says. “Not without my permission.”
Daniel has to put the knife down before he accidentally takes off a finger. “Touch myself how?” He’s got a good idea of what Ryan’s getting at, but he likes specifics. And maybe he just wants to make Ryan squirm a little.

The plan backfires, because Ryan meets Daniel’s gaze straight on and says, “No jerking off. No giving yourself a couple squeezes during your morning shower. No lazy touches as you get ready for bed.”
It’s Daniel who ends up with pink cheeks and short of breath when Ryan’s done talking, but he manages to say, “Okay,” without a waver in his voice.

He goes back to the garlic, because he needs to finish the glaze so he can cook the chicken or dinner will never be done. The move puts his back to Ryan, and he should’ve known that Ryan wouldn’t let the conversation end so quickly.

A moment later, he can feel Ryan’s heat against his back, and then Ryan’s stepping in close, hands on Daniel’s hips so he can look over his shoulder.

“You can say no,” Ryan reminds him, like Daniel doesn’t understand how consent works. “Or ask questions.”
“I’m saying yes,” Daniel says. It’s not like he masturbates often. And from the way Ryan’s floated the suggestion, it sounds like he’ll have the opportunity to ask for permission. That thought is what sends a little shiver down his spine, and with Ryan as close as he is, there’s no way he doesn’t feel it too. “How’re you going to know?”

“Besides the honor system?” Ryan says. His breath tickles Daniel’s neck. “I’m going to call and check up on you.”

Daniel has to take a steadying breath before he adds the red pepper flakes, rosemary, and salt to the garlic and begins mincing again. “You couldn’t have waited to float this idea until I was done with the knife stage of dinner?” He’s not really annoyed. If he was then he’d just tell Ryan to knock it off.
Ryan knows it too, because he crowds closer, until his hips press right up against Daniel’s ass. “Am I distracting you? I thought your self-control and ability to multitask were flawless.”
“I will remind you I’m holding a knife,” Daniel says. He finishes using the sharp end of the blade and now he uses the flat end to mash the mixture up.

“Out of curiosity,” Ryan says, “are you saying yes because you think it’ll be easy or because you like the thought of giving up control to me even when we’re not together? Or because it’s something I want to do?”
“All three,” Daniel answers. He likes doing things that Ryan wants to do, especially when they line up with things he’s interested in. Giving Ryan control over something as private and intimate as his orgasms is something that appeals to him maybe more than it should. And, of course, there’s the fact that he likes a challenge, and he finds he can push himself further when it’s Ryan setting the demands and the limits rather than Daniel himself. “But mostly the first one. I’m not an excessive masturbator.”
“I find that difficult to believe,” Ryan says, and Daniel can’t see him, but he can imagine the eye roll that accompanies his statement. “But it also sounds like you’re daring me to make this difficult for you.”
“I would never.” Daniel keeps his tone light, just shy of teasing. “You’re the one in control of everything.”
“Put the knife down,” Ryan says and as soon as Daniel’s dropped the knife to the cutting board, Ryan spins him around and kisses him. Ryan bites at Daniel’s bottom lip until Daniel opens his mouth and lets Ryan sweep in and claim the kiss. When he pulls back, Daniel’s breathing heavy and holding on to the counter like it’s the only thing keeping him on his feet.

Ryan pats Daniel’s hip and then wanders back to the far side of the island where his phone is.
“Tease,” Daniel says, but he can’t keep the smile off his face.
“We haven’t even started,” Ryan promises him.
